About the movie Buen Camino

Review of “Buen Camino” (2025): an Italian comedy about wealth, fatherhood, and the road back to oneself

“Buen Camino” is a 2025 Italian comedy directed by Gennaro Nunziante, with Checco Zalone in the lead role. The cast also includes Beatriz Arjona, Letizia Arnò, Martina Colombari, Hossein Taheri, and Alfonso Santagata. The film tells the story of a wealthy and superficial father who is forced to leave his comfortable life behind and set off on the Way of St. James to find his missing teenage daughter.

The main character lives as if the world exists solely for his pleasure. Money, villas, servants, idleness, and a complete unwillingness to take responsibility define his everyday reality. But the disappearance of his daughter Crystal breaks this comfortable cocoon. What at first seems to him like an annoying inconvenience gradually turns into a real test: he is forced to walk, listen, endure discomfort, and for the first time confront not only other people, but also himself.

At the heart of “Buen Camino” is a familiar comic setup: a spoiled man from a world of luxury finds himself in circumstances where money and status no longer solve everything. The Way of St. James becomes not just a route for him, but a space for inner rebooting. Blisters, fatigue, chance encounters, and everyday hardships gradually strip away the protective layer of his self-satisfaction.

Checco Zalone plays the character on the edge of caricature, and this is exactly where the film’s comic nature works best. His hero is funny in his childishness, selfishness, and inability to understand simple human things. At the same time, the film is not limited to a set of jokes about a rich idler. Beneath the comic surface, there is a story about late maturity, paternal responsibility, and the painful realization that you cannot truly know the people closest to you only formally.

Gennaro Nunziante builds the film as a road comedy with elements of family drama. What matters here is not only the funny situations, but also the movement itself: the hero physically walks a path that gradually turns into an emotional journey. The farther he moves away from his usual comfort zone, the clearer it becomes that the real problem is not only his daughter’s disappearance, but the fact that he knows almost nothing about her life.

The film does not aim for harsh social satire, but it gently mocks the world of privilege, consumption, and outward prosperity. Wealth here does not make a person stronger; on the contrary, it highlights his helplessness in the face of real life. The comedy grows out of the contrast between the self-confident hero and a road that does not recognize his usual rules.

At the same time, “Buen Camino” remains a fairly soft and audience-friendly film. Its humor is not designed to destroy the character, but to gradually humanize him. The story may seem predictable: the path toward inner change is easy to anticipate, and many turns fit the familiar formula of a comedy about re-education. But it is precisely this simplicity that makes the film accessible and warm.

The theme of fatherhood works best of all. The hero sets out to find his daughter, but in reality he is searching for the lost connection with her. His journey shows that parenthood is not a status or a biological fact, but constant involvement, attention, and the willingness to leave one’s own comfort behind for another person.

“Buen Camino” (2025) is a light, good-natured, and at times touching Italian comedy about a man who has to walk a long road in order to understand the simplest things. It is a film about the coming-of-age of an adult man, about family, responsibility, and the fact that sometimes the road back to loved ones begins only when familiar comfort collapses.
