About the movie Max & Jeremie
French cinema has always masterfully explored human drama against any circumstances, and Claire Devers' 1992 film «Max et Jérémie» is no exception. This profound drama immerses the viewer in a world of crime, where professional killers face not only external threats but also moral dilemmas. The film builds a complex story of relationships, transforming a typical criminal assignment into something far greater than just a hunt.
Plot
A young and ambitious criminal named Jeremy, after a series of successful operations, seeks more serious challenges and advancement. His bosses assign him a difficult task: to eliminate a retired, but still dangerous, professional hitman. Jeremy, following a plan, stages a chance encounter in a supermarket, placing a bottle of champagne in the future victim's cart. The experienced killer, Max (as implied by the title), instantly recognizes the «greenhorn» as an envoy, but instead of confrontation, offers to work together. The reason is a large order for 750,000 francs from an old man who wants to settle scores with a long-time enemy before he dies. Jeremy's bosses approve his temporary partnership with Max but set a condition: after the job is done, Jeremy must also kill his mentor. However, during their joint work, an unexpected bond forms between the young and experienced hitmen. When Jeremy refuses to follow the original order, the bosses, displeased with this turn of events, send their enforcers after the unusual partners, turning their lives into a constant struggle for survival.

Themes
«Max et Jérémie» is a film about mentorship and apprenticeship, where an old wolf passes on his knowledge to a young, not yet fully formed predator. The central theme is moral choice and loyalty: Jeremy faces a difficult dilemma when personal attachment conflicts with professional duty. The film also explores the price of ambition, as the young hitman's desire for «real work» leads him to an existential crisis. The burden of the past is also touched upon, both for Max, who has retired, and for his elderly client, who wishes to settle old scores. Ultimately, it's a story about an attempt to break the system, where individual connections prove stronger than corporate orders.
