About the movie Nice Dreams

The year 1981 presented fans of the iconic duo Cheech and Chong with the third chapter of their endless adventures — the film "Up in Smoke 3". Directed by Tommy Chong, the picture confidently continues the traditions of previous installments, delving into signature absurdity and boundless slapstick comedy, spiced with the specific humor that became the comedians' calling card.

Plot

This time, buddies Cheech and Chong find a new, highly inventive way to distribute their "product," masking marijuana as innocent ice cream. Naturally, such a daring scheme does not go unnoticed, and the police, after a controlled purchase, get on their tail. However, the heroes wouldn't be themselves if they didn't have another ingenious plan up their sleeve: they successfully hide on a marijuana plantation cleverly disguised as a regular swimming pool. Meanwhile, police sergeant Stedanko, brilliantly portrayed by Stacy Keach, discovers very unusual side effects from the confiscated weed and gradually gets hooked on it himself, sinking into a whirlpool of psychedelic madness. The climax arrives when the guys start an orgy with an old acquaintance, and at the height of the events, an escaped convict named Animal appears, obsessed with the idea of "ripping a couple of Mexicans apart," which inevitably leads to chaotic and unpredictable consequences.

Why Watch

  • The Iconic Duo in Their Element: Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong demonstrate the very "chemistry" and eccentricity that millions love them for. Their improvisations and interaction are the foundation of all the comedy.
  • Inventive Absurdity: From selling weed ice cream to a swimming pool plantation – the film is full of original and grotesque situations that distinguish "Up in Smoke" from ordinary comedies.
  • Antagonist's Transformation: Stacy Keach's performance as Sergeant Stedanko is a separate show. His character goes from a strict lawman to a victim of his own investigation, adding unexpected comedic shades to the film.
  • Unique 80s Atmosphere: The cinematic style, humor, and even musical motifs immerse the viewer in an era when such comedies had a special boldness and freshness.

Themes

"Up in Smoke 3" explores themes of counterculture and rebellion against societal norms through the prism of sparkling comedy. The film plays with the idea of mocking authority figures, showing how representatives of the law themselves can become victims of what they fight against. It is also a story of unbreakable friendship and loyalty that can withstand the craziest predicaments. Beneath the superficial frivolity lies a reflection on freedom and the limits of what is permissible, expressed in the most irreverent and entertaining form.

Editor's Opinion

"Up in Smoke 3" is not just a film; it's a kind of ritual for those who appreciate the stoner comedy genre and adore the immortal duo of Cheech and Chong. The 1981 picture is the quintessence of their work, where every frame is imbued with unbridled fun and an anarchic spirit. The film does not claim to offer deep philosophical insights but perfectly accomplishes its main task — to make you laugh to tears, sending the viewer on a hilarious journey through a world where logic gives way to absolute absurdity. For anyone looking for a light yet daring comedy, "Up in Smoke 3" will be an excellent choice, and the cast, led by director Tommy Chong and Stacy Keach, will keep you entertained every minute.
