About the movie Best Seller

"Best Seller," a 1987 film by director John Flynn, is an intense drama that masterfully intertwines the criminal and literary worlds. It's an ethical labyrinth where ambitions clash with mortal threats, and the pursuit of truth can demand too high a price.

Plot

Dennis, a former police officer and now a successful detective novelist, meets Cleve – a professional killer. Cleve, ordered to be killed by his own boss whose financial empire is built on the killer's crimes, seeks revenge and survival. He offers Dennis a deal: all the details of his deeds in exchange for a future "best seller" that will expose the corrupt man. Dennis, seeing a chance for a sensation, agrees. But as work on the book progresses, witnesses start to die. The writer realizes that his investigation has become a deadly game, threatening not only him but also his loved ones – his mistress Roberta and daughter Holly. An intellectual adventure turns into an existential threat.

Why watch it

  • Intriguing concept: an alliance between a writer and a hitman, where creativity and crime are inextricably linked.
  • Mounting tension: each revealed detail increases the danger, creating a constant anticipation of threat.
  • Moral dilemmas: the film makes you ponder the price of truth and the ethics of creating a work based on others' suffering.

Themes

"Best Seller" deeply explores betrayal, revenge, the destructive power of ambition, and ethical boundaries in art and journalism. The film shows how the thirst for success and justice can lead to irreversible consequences, forcing characters to cross moral "red lines". It's a reflection on the fragility of security and on how the true price of a bestseller can be measured not only by fame but also by lives.

Editorial opinion

John Flynn's "Best Seller" is a smart and relevant drama. It builds its power on a strong plot, tense atmosphere, and deep conflicts. This is a film for those who appreciate sharp plots, non-linear morality, and stories that make you ponder the duality of human nature and the true cost of success. The film serves as a warning: some deals can cost more than they seem at first glance.
