About the movie Mickey 17
In 2025, "Mickey 17" is set to hit screens – a new work by one of today's most intriguing directors, Bong Joon-ho. Blending dark science fiction with outright comedy, this film promises more than just entertainment. With a powerful cast including Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, and Steven Yeun, the picture invites us into a dystopian future where survival comes at a shocking price, and one's own identity becomes a commodity. Prepare for an unpredictable story that, as expected from Bong Joon-ho, is sure to make you think.
Plot
The action transports us to the 2050s. The protagonist, Mickey Barnes, desperately tries to escape a bloodthirsty creditor known for his ruthlessness towards debtors. Together with a friend, Mickey decides to enlist as a colonist heading to the distant planet Niflheim. However, their paths quickly diverge: his friend becomes a pilot, while Mickey faces a far less enviable fate. He gains the status of an "expendable employee" — a person whose life is considered cheap and interchangeable. His task is to perform deadly dangerous missions, die, and then be resurrected in a freshly printed body into which his consciousness is uploaded. But one day, the unforeseen happens: Mickey 17, having fallen into a cave, miraculously escapes thanks to the creepers inhabiting Niflheim. Upon returning to base, he faces a shocking reality – his 18th version has already had its consciousness uploaded. Now, two versions of Mickey Barnes exist in one place.
Why You Should Watch
- Vision of Bong Joon-ho: The director, known for his satirical and deeply social commentaries ("Parasite," "Snowpiercer"), once again tackles genre cinema, promising a unique blend of humor and dark sci-fi.
- Original Concept: The idea of an "expendable employee" who dies and is resurrected in a new body raises fundamental questions about life, death, and identity, but through the lens of comedy.
- Star-studded Cast: The presence of actors like Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, and Steven Yeun guarantees outstanding performances and depth even in the most absurd situations.
- Genre Inversion: The expected "comedy" set against a dystopian sci-fi backdrop with horror elements (a creditor dismembering debtors) — this challenges expectations and holds the potential for truly fresh cinema.
Themes
"Mickey 17" delves into complex existential questions. What does it mean to be human when your personality can be copied and uploaded into a new shell? What is the value of an individual life if it can be so easily replaced? The film will likely explore themes of personal identity, survival under brutal capitalism, and corporate ethics. The conflict between Mickey 17 and Mickey 18 is a metaphor for internal contradiction and the search for one's place in a world where self-determination becomes a luxury.
